Description
A reimagined and beautifully restored three-bedroom Victorian home, sitting toward the far end of Thurlow Road in the thriving suburb of Clarendon Park. The red-brick façade carries timber sashes set into a deep bay, with decorative brickwork to the upper elevation and a green-painted door behind low railings. Inside, the original encaustic tile floor has been carefully restored in the entrance hall: a geometric pattern in oxblood, ochre and cream, framed by carved archway corbels. The hall draws the eye through to the kitchen at the rear of the plan, where birch plywood and pale terrazzo close the perspective.
There are two receptions, kept as separate rooms in the original Victorian configuration. The front sits within the bay, three sashes pulling light deep into the space, and retains its cornicing alongside a cast-iron register grate with floral detail. Presently arranged for dining, it adapts readily to other uses. The second reception, behind it, opens to the kitchen through a wide cased opening and to the courtyard beyond through full-height glazed doors. A second cast-iron grate is set into the chimney breast, and the room reads as the everyday heart of the plan.
The kitchen has been remodelled and extended, finished throughout with considered detail and a high standard of craft. Carcasses are birch plywood, the timber's natural orange tone left exposed, with finger-pulls in place of handles. Worktops are polished concrete. A Belfast sink sits beneath the rear window, with a Rangemaster alongside and an array of integrated appliances built in. The floor is terrazzo, imported from Malta, a pale ground scattered with chips of marble and dark stone, laid in the manner of the island's traditional terrazzo masters. It carries through into the rear reception and lends the back half of the house a continuity that the joinery sits cleanly above.
A staircase rises from the hall to a landing of stripped pine boards, lit by a clear glass globe pendant. The principal bedroom occupies the full width of the front bay, with sashes on three planes and a paper globe lantern overhead. A cast-iron column radiator runs below the windows. The original register grate has been retained in the chimney breast; its decorative casting is unrestored and the better for it. The walls are painted in a band of soft peach above white, a contemporary reading of the two-tone schemes traditional to bedrooms of this period. The second bedroom, at the rear, has been arranged as a study and dressing room. The floor is painted a flat green, and a length of String shelving (the Nisse Strinning system, originally designed in 1949) runs along the wall. The third bedroom looks into the canopy of trees at the rear of the plot: a quiet, north-facing room with stripped boards and a single sash framing the view. The bathroom has been tastefully remodelled around a beautifully reimagined 1950s suite in pale pink: pedestal basin, low-level cistern, panelled bath, set against white square tiles with dark grout and terrazzo flooring.
Outside, a pair of glazed doors leads to a low-maintenance, walled courtyard at the back of the plot. The paving is reclaimed stone, and a mature wisteria trained along the rear wall brings seasonal colour through its spring blossom. Two original outbuildings sit at the boundary, their green-painted timber doors intact and offering scope to extend the existing accommodation further, subject to the usual consents. On-street parking is readily available directly outside the property, under the local resident permit scheme.
This is arguably one of the most design-influenced three-bedroom homes available in this price bracket currently in the immediate area. An early viewing is essential to appreciate the craftsmanship on offer.
